About
Design efforts are underway to replace the 31st Street bridge at Fontanero and corresponding channel, along with improved pedestrian facilities. The project will improve the congested four-way stop intersection and drainage channels with installation of a roundabout.
Goals and Objectives for the Project:
- Promote continuous flow of traffic and reduce congestion
- Improve air quality for residents by reducing braking/acceleration noise and air pollution
- Improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists
- Create a focal point and gateway for this historic neighborhood
- Improve water quality
- Maintain the existing character of this residential neighborhood
Project Cost
Funding for this phase of the project is through a combination of Metropolitan Planning Program (MPP) and Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) Federal grants.
Background
This project began in response to the effects of the Waldo Canyon fire and resulted in a three-pronged approach including the pond at Garden of the Gods, channel improvements at the Rock Ledge Ranch with naturalistic channel improvements, and a roundabout at Fontanero and 31st Street.
Public Input
- A public open house will be held in late 2025/early 2026. Please check back for updates on how you can provide your input on this important project.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of the project?
The project aims to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and address drainage issues at the Fontanero and 31st Street intersection. The project will replace the existing four-way stop with a roundabout to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
Why was a roundabout chosen instead of a traffic signal?
A roundabout was selected for its numerous benefits:
- Enhanced Safety: Reduces severe collisions by eliminating high-speed, right-angle impacts
- Traffic Efficiency: Promotes continuous flow, reducing congestion and traffic back-ups
- Cost-Effectiveness: Lowers energy consumption and maintenance costs
- Environmental: Reduces noise pollution from idling and emissions, improves drainage, and maintains the historic neighborhood’s character while creating a gateway feature.
- Pedestrian Safety: Simplifies crossing for pedestrian and cyclist safety.
How will the roundabout affect parking?
On-street parking will be limited in certain areas due to the construction of bike ramps and curb adjustments. In some cases, parking pockets will be created to alleviate traffic flow issues. The project team will work with property owners to address specific parking concerns.
How does this project benefit the community?
The project will:
- Reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions
- Enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety
- Improve drainage
- Maintain the historic neighborhood’s character while creating a gateway feature
Will large vehicles, such as tour buses or RVs, be able to navigate the roundabout?
Yes, the roundabout will include rollover aprons designed specifically for large vehicles, ensuring smooth passage for buses, RVs, and other oversized vehicles.
What is the timeline for the project?
The project is currently in the design phase, with public information planned for late 2025/early 2026. As the project progresses, we will provide a detailed timeline of milestones.
How will residents be impacted during construction?
Construction will be phased to maintain access for residents. Temporary detours and changes to traffic patterns will be implemented, and alternative routes will be clearly marked. The project team will provide regular updates on construction phasing and project scheduling.
How can I stay informed about the project, provide feedback, and ask questions?
You can stay updated by:
- Attending the open house- dates TBA
- Emailing the project team at FontaneroImprovements@gmail.com
- Calling the project hotline at 719-679-4880.
Regularly visiting the project page and emailing us to sign up for the project newsletter.
Will the sidewalks and bike lanes be affected?
Sidewalks will be widened to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, while dedicated bike lanes will be removed through the roundabout. Cyclists can either use widened sidewalks or the roundabout itself.
How long will the construction last?
Construction is expected to last one year. The duration may vary depending on specific project phases, adjacent projects, and weather conditions.
How will drainage improvements impact the neighborhood?
Improved surface drainage will prevent water from ponding in the travel lanes. The enhanced bridge opening will convey larger creek flows than the current bridge, reducing flood risks in the area.
Are there other projects happening in our area?
Yes. Currently, the City is in design with one other local infrastructure project. Below is the link to that project page. This project will go into construction sometime in late 2026/early 2027.
