The City of Colorado Springs received funding from the Colorado Circular Communities (C3) to complete a waste characterization study and Waste Diversion Action Plan. The City has contracted Resource Recycling Systems (RRS) to complete the study and plan which are anticipated to be completed by Q4 2025.
About
Background
To understand the waste management system of Colorado Springs, the project team conducted a field inspection, a two-season waste characterization study, and a system evaluation including stakeholder interviews, infrastructure scan, policy review, comparative city review, tonnage modeling, gap analysis, and economic impact analysis. Findings of these activities and additional stakeholder engagement to take place in October 2025 will inform the final recommendations included in the Waste Diversion Action Plan.
Goals
The goal of this project is to generate an action-ready plan that outlines short and long-term strategies that the city can implement to increase waste diversion.
