City officials released that preliminary work started earlier this week to repair North Cheyenne Canyon Road after a washout occurred earlier this month, closing both that road and Gold Camp Road indefinitely in North Cheyenne Cañon.

The preliminary work, conducted jointly by the City of Colorado Springs and Colorado Springs Utilities, focuses on stabilizing the creek channel. Once the creek is stabilized, road repairs can occur. Ongoing weather conditions could impact the repair schedule.

According to City Engineer Gayle Sturdivant, crews should have a better idea of a reopening timeline sometime in the next few weeks.

“We know the importance of that road for both residents who reside in the Cañon and people who use it recreationally,” she said. “We’re working towards getting the road reopened but doing so in a way that ensures everyone’s safety.”

On June 4, a significant amount of rain caused the roadway to wash out an entire lane about 1.5 miles up the Cañon from the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center.

Gold Camp Road remains closed to the public. It is only accessible to residents who reside in the area. The public closure ensures people who live in the area can use Gold Camp Road to access their residences safely. The closure is also a safety precaution for the public to alleviate congestion on the narrow, steep road. It is the only way in and out of North Cheyenne Cañon for residents. Recreational users accessing North Cheyenne Cañon should park only in designated areas, or risk being ticketed and towed. City officials ask everyone to respect all signed closures and barricades for the safety of the public and employees working to repair the road.
