On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased male involved in the January 27, 2024, deputy/officer-involved shooting as 51-year-old Christopher Fraijo, of El Paso County, CO.
The Colorado Springs Police Department will continue to investigate this per Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301. This is still an active and ongoing investigation. On Saturday, January 27, 2024, at approximately 1:40 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a shooting involving deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Fountain Police Department near the intersection of Security Boulevard and Crawford Avenue in Security-Widefield. Detectives with the CSPD Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the Investigation.
On Saturday, January 27, 2024, at approximately 12:38 AM, a call came into the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center from an EPSO Deputy reporting an adult male walking south on Security Boulevard with a firearm in unincorporated El Paso County.
Deputies from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Fountain Police Department responded to the scene and made contact with the suspect. They asked him to drop the firearm, at which time the suspect refused to comply with their commands.
At one point, the suspect pointed his weapon at law enforcement, and at least one deputy from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and at least one officer from the Fountain Police Department fired at least one round at the suspect. Lifesaving medical efforts were rendered on the scene, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
Other than the suspect, no EPSO Deputies, FPD Officers, or community members were injured. The deceased suspect will be identified at a later date by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the Colorado Springs Police Department is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting. The EPSO deputies and Fountain Police officers identified as having fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave per their department policies.
This is an ongoing investigation, and information will be released as appropriate. All information regarding the deadly force investigation will come from the Colorado Springs Police Department. Information regarding the law enforcement officers involved in this incident will come from EPSO and FPD, respectively.
