In recognition of Park and Recreation Month this July, the City of Colorado Springs is offering a variety of activities aimed at engaging the community in outdoor recreation and fostering connection through local parks.
As part of the celebration, Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) will host two free events – a silent disco at Panorama Park on Friday, July 11 and Music in the Park at Piñon Valley on Friday, July 25. Youth activities during the events, including kickball and basketball games, will also be available
These events are also part of the city’s 1000 Gatherings Initiative, the community campaign that invites residents to host neighborhood gatherings throughout the summer months. Launched in May 2024, this initiative aims to help address mental health by encouraging residents to connect with one another through gathering to build a social support system in their community. This July, the city encourages residents to host or attend a gathering at one of more than 160 neighborhood parks across Colorado Springs.
In addition, PRCS will host the "Build Your Own Park" challenge that allows residents to design their dream park on paper and the annual Discover COS Calendar photo contest. Winners of the challenge will be featured on PRCS social and winners of the photo contest in the 2026 Discover COS Calendar.
“July is a special time to celebrate the incredible recreational opportunities and resources we have in our city. We are fortunate to enjoy beautiful parks, scenic trails, and vibrant community spaces that enrich our lives,” said Kim King, Assistant Director of PRCS. “This month, we also want to recognize our dedicated park and recreation staff, whose hard work and passion make these experiences possible. Their commitment ensures that our community can connect, play, and explore the great outdoors.”
A program of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the goal of National Park and Recreation Month is to recognize the essential services that park and recreation professionals provide to the community and to reflect on the exponential value local parks and open spaces have on our quality of life. 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of NRPA’s Park and Recreation Month celebrations.
