On July 13, 2025, at approximately 4:25 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of South Powers Boulevard and Fountain Boulevard. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene and determined that two people were deceased. Two others had life-threatening injuries and were immediately transported to a nearby hospital, and one person suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Based on this information, the CSPD Major Crash Team (MCT) responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The investigation into this crash has determined that a Nissan Rogue, carrying four people, was traveling southbound on Powers Boulevard, approaching Fountain Boulevard, in the inside lane of traffic, exceeding the speed limit. The second vehicle, a Lexus SUV, was traveling north on Powers, entering the intersection of Fountain Boulevard, and was making an unprotected left-hand turn. The Nissan entered the intersection, and the front of the Nissan collided with the front end of the Lexus. After contact, the Nissan Rogue slid and rolled, coming to rest on the southwest corner of the roadway.

On July 14, 2025, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted autopsies on the deceased people from the crash. One of the deceased persons was a 17-year-old female. Since this person is a minor, we will not be releasing her identity. The other deceased person from the crash was identified as 18-year-old Bryan Jaramillo.

On July 15, 2025, the driver of the Nissan Rogue succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital. On July 16, 2025, the El Paso County Coroners' Office conducted an autopsy on the driver, who has been identified as 19-year-old Gabriel Zelayia.

Also on July 16, 2025, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified that the fourth person from the Nissan succumbed to their injuries. On July 17, 2025, the El Paso County Coroners' Office conducted an autopsy of the fourth deceased person from the Nissan Rogue. This person has been identified as 20-year-old Janet Pino-Lopez.

These four young adults, ages 17 to 20 years old, are the 26th, 27th, 28th, and 29th fatalities in Colorado Springs this year. At this same time last year, there were 31 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs. That means in the past 365 days, there have been 47 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.

Between July 5, 2025, and July 13, 2025, the Colorado Springs area experienced six traffic-related fatalities. All six of these people were between the ages of 17 and 20. All six people were tragically lost in two separate crashes. Both involved high speeds, alcohol, and the victims were not wearing seatbelts. The CSPD would like to remind and encourage parents to have important conversations with their teenage drivers about safety behind the wheel. We also continue to ask all drivers in our community to please slow down, wear your seatbelt, and refrain from drinking and driving. These simple practices save lives.
