On July 24, 2025, at approximately 11:25 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a call for service for a vehicle versus a pedestrian crash near the intersection of North Union Boulevard and Hillcrest Avenue. The investigation revealed there was a road rage incident that resulted in one individual being run over by a vehicle, and that vehicle fled the scene.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for multiple injuries, and physicians deemed him to be in critical condition.  Detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department Assault Unit responded to the scene and continued investigative efforts. 

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Daniel Nations. Nations was taken into custody and charged with Assault in the First Degree. A booking photo of Mr. Nations will be released on the CSPD X Account.

On July 27, 2025, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified that the victim had passed away from his injuries.  Detectives from CSPD's Violent Crimes Section, Homicide Unit, were assigned to the investigation. 

On July 28, 2025, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the deceased male and identified him as 35-year-old Jacob Martinez.  While the coroner’s office will determine the cause and manner of death, this is being investigated as a homicide. A photo of Mr. Martinez has been provided by his family below.

On July 29, 2025, Daniel Nations was charged with Murder in the First Degree while still in custody at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

This was the 21st homicide in 2025 in Colorado Springs.  At this time last year, there were 24 homicides. This is still an active investigation; further suspect and victim information will be released when appropriate.
